Diving with bull sharks in Playa del Carmen: when to go and what the dive is like

Every winter, off the beaches of Playa del Carmen, something happens that very few places in the world can offer: groups of bull sharks come close to the coast, and you can see them on a dive just a short way from shore. I have lived and dived here for more than 16 years, and it is still one of the dives that moves me the most.

When is the season?

The season runs from late November to early March. During these months bull sharks, mostly females, come close to the Playa del Carmen coast. Outside those dates they are very hard to see, so if this is your dream, plan your trip for winter.

What is the dive like?

  • Boat departure from Playa del Carmen: the site is very close to shore, just a few minutes away.
  • Depth of about 20 to 25 meters, over a sandy bottom.
  • You stay still near the bottom, as a group, moving slowly, and the sharks come to you.
  • A full briefing before the dive: where to position yourself, what to do and what not to do.

In Playa del Carmen, some dive centers only do observation (you see the sharks in their environment without attracting them) and others do attraction with guided feeding by experts. They are different experiences: ask us about each one before you book.

What level do I need?

This dive is for certified divers, at a depth of about 25 meters. Each dive center sets its own rules: many ask for Advanced Open Water or deep-diving experience. On our expedition we ask for a reef dive first (the day 1 warm-up) to check your weighting, buoyancy and comfort in the water.

Tips from a local

  • Arrive with good buoyancy: staying stable near the bottom is what matters most.
  • Do a reef dive first to shake off the rust.
  • Wear dark colors and avoid shiny objects.
  • Have dive insurance.
  • Remember these are wild animals: encounters are never guaranteed.
